WASHI N0.6 PAPER YARN

WASHI NO.6 paper yarn is our in-house developed paper yarn. The whole process of developing our own brand paper yarn took almost 21 years in total to create the perfect ideal yarn that we are satisfy to show to the world.

We only uses the vintage Toyota selvedge machine to weave our in-house fabric, WASHI NO.6 for the weft and eco-rope dyed ecological cotton yarn for the warp. You will see that every 10cm in the selvedge has the mark of our WASHI NO.6 paper yarn that is created by the switching of the shuttle from the weaving machine. 

WA (和) means Japanese. SHI (紙) means paper

The brand inspiration comes from traditional Japanese handmade paper “WASHI”. Our founder, Hiro Yoshikawa has dedicated over a decade in developing his own unique WASHI paper fabric using Japanese handmade paper “WASHI”. Through a refined process involving cold, natural running water and other natural material that is cool in summer but warm in winter, is quick-drying, and is shape retaining with anti bacterial properties.

With sustainability being the brand key concern, every process in the making of the WASHI jeans is carefully crafted in order to comply to this philosophy.

From creating our own sustainable fabric, using mild and hand washing technique, and the selection of trimming. All the labels on WASHI jeans are using high quality ECO-cotton. The sewing thread used is call Japanese core yarn, after wearing out, the sewing effect will become more beautiful, creating a vintage effect on the jeans. The coin pocket area is also strengthen for more durable usage over time. The stitching of the back pockets have a high-low effect sewing technique, which create a more vintage appearance over time. 

There are many hidden details in each paid of WASHI jeans. The longer you wear, the more beautiful it will become.

WASHI’S PASSION FOR WASHING

Our brand name WASHI also implies “Washing “ , denim “washing” is our brand’s essence.

We don’t use chemical on jeans to achieve quick washing effect. In fact, each pair of WASHI jeans go through over 20 times of natural washing in 100% recycle water and drying process. Each process is carefully treated by our technicians.

It takes several months to complete this whole washing process to achieve our high quality premium vintage look that very few can achieved. This is the commitment of keeping the high standard of our brand that is drive from our passion.

Each WASHI jeans carries a washing name. The washing names are based on our founder’s inspirations and his emotions. Each pair of WASHI jeans is hiding his story when he creates those wash.

FROM OKAYAMA TO THE WORLD

Each process of the Washi Jeans is made in Okayama, from the making of the yarn, to weaving of the fabric, to sewing and washing.

With Okayama rich history of producing textiles, and Kojima known as the birthplace of Japanese denim, together with the beautiful water in Japan, there is no where else In this world can produce such highly crafted artisan jeans than Okayama.

FOUNDER MR HIRO YOSHIKAWA

As the 2nd son of the 18th generation of a sake family in Japan, Hiro spent a lifetime surrounded by craftmanship and artistry. On graduating from University in 1989, he travel around the world to pursuit his own business in fashion. 

He had the opportunity to fly between Europe and Asia to understand the different fashion cultures, and through the journey he encountered with denim that he became very passionate for.

After years of of travelling around the world, he then went back to Japan, Okayama, the birthplace of denim, to study and learn the craftmanship of denim making from his denim master. Until today, Hiro is heralded as the Master Jeans Wash designer. 

In 2000, he had an idea to create some new material for his denim craft work. He was inspired by the washi material on the SHOJI (Japanese Sliding door) in his home and started to use washi to create a new kind of yarn – known as the WASHI NO.6.  Hiro’s pursuit of excellence and perseverance to his beginning of the development of the WASHI NO. 6 took 7 years of development before it was ready to weave into selvedge denim fabric.  After all the trial and error with the WASHI NO.6 inhouse fabric, the brand finally officially launched in 2021.
